Airlines, Airports and Handling agents need IT and Telecommunications systems not only to operate but also survive. Today’s use of IT in the Air transport industry is partially dicated by increased consumer pressure for convenience but also increasingly the need for airlines to reduce costs.
Over the past 30 years the industry has automated every function and process. Basic reservation systems have grown to become fully integrated e-commerce systems. Manual check-in now a distant memory, replaced by e-ticketing and sophicated departure control systems.
If systems fail or telecommunciations slow down, nobody is willing to return to those days of paper check-in and manual loadplanning. IT is now so important to the brand of an airline, any failure is a potentially a major customer relationship issue.
